Reflections from Simone Reitzes, Managing Director, Medicus Pension Plan
A story about what can happen when financial advice starts with understanding a physician’s life, not just their investments.
In my role at Medicus, I often think about what physicians need most from financial support.
Strong investment management matters. But what matters even more is feeling understood, having someone step back and look at your life, your family, your practice and your future.
One recent physician story brought that into focus for me.
The physician was an endocrinologist in his early 50s with a growing practice, four children and significant assets. By most measures, he was doing very well: he had incorporated, he was saving diligently and he had an established relationship with a financial institution. But when he was asked how often he reviewed his financial plan, the answer was telling: he didn’t. His focus had been on what he had, not what he wanted his money to accomplish.
This is a pattern we see too often. Physicians spend their careers caring for others while navigating demanding, complex financial lives of their own. Compensation, incorporation, investments, tax strategy, retirement planning and family goals are all connected. When advice focuses on only one piece, important opportunities can be overlooked.
The value of being seen as a person, not just an investor
When the opportunity to join the Medicus Pension Plan became part of the picture, this physician connected with a new advisor, and our Medicus team partnered with them to look beyond the portfolio and understand the full picture: his corporation, family responsibilities, retirement goals and long-term aspirations.
In the process, an important gap emerged. For six years, he had been drawing only dividends from his professional corporation. While that approach can make sense from a tax perspective, dividends don’t create room for RRSP contributions or pension participation. It wasn’t a mistake so much as an incomplete strategy, and it had significant implications for his long-term retirement security.
That is where the features of the Medicus Pension Plan stood out. Designed specifically for physicians and built around the realities of medical careers, Medicus provides predictable lifetime retirement income and the flexibility to support different family circumstances, including extended guarantee periods, spousal pension options and inflation protection.
For this physician, those features mattered. Retirement planning was about more than assets; it was about creating stability for his family, and confidence in the future he was working so hard to build.
The real value came from taking a step back and looking at the whole picture. By asking broader questions and connecting the pieces, he uncovered a solution that reflected the realities of his life.
When retirement planning becomes family planning
Once his retirement planning was addressed, the conversation naturally expanded. Within weeks, a more integrated financial plan began to take shape, one that connected his investments, corporation, retirement savings and family goals.
His next step was to look at education savings planning for his four children. With greater clarity around retirement, he could focus on other priorities and opportunities for the people who mattered most to him.
The bigger lesson
Every physician has a unique story, but one thing is universal: financial decisions are deeply connected to life decisions.
Retirement, family, practice ownership, education planning and long-term security don't exist in separate silos. The most meaningful conversations happen when those pieces are considered together, creating a strategy that supports not just financial success, but also peace of mind.
Physicians have complex financial lives, but their goals are often remarkably human: caring for family, creating security and building a future that reflects the life they’ve worked so hard to create.
When financial planning starts with the whole person, not just their investments, it becomes easier to connect those goals with the resources and opportunities that can help bring them to life.
